"Daschle Dawdle Watch"
The Indepundit is keeping track of the belly-crawling of South Dakota's senatorial snake in the grass.
From The Indepundit Scott Koenig:
.... Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D - South Dakota) and other Democratic leaders are questioning the timing of President Bush's war of words with Iraq, complaining that he is using the issue to influence the upcoming election.
My question to the Honorable Mr. Daschle: Why do you fear this debate?
Daschle would like the election to be about domestic issues, where Democrats poll slightly ahead of Republicans. If it becomes an election about national security, on the other hand, the Republicans win. From a political point of view, Daschle's concerns are understandable.
From a voter's point of view, however, Daschle's concerns are entirely self-serving. Since the Terrible Tuesday attacks, the citizens of the United States have come to care a great deal about national security issues. Indeed, in many recent polls, voters have listed national security as one of their top concerns. For Daschle to try to make this election entirely about domestic issues would be to ignore the chief concerns of the American people. The voters need to know where their representatives stand. After all, isn't this supposed to be a representative democracy?
If Senator Daschle succeeds in delaying a vote on military action against Saddam Hussein until after the election, he will have effectively cut the voters out of the debate.
That is not something that a "democrat" would do, is it?
I am putting Senator Daschle on notice: I will be reporting, every day, on your attempts to delay the vote on military action against Saddam until after the November election. If you try to cut the voting public out of the loop, I will explain to the voters how you don't want their voices to be heard, because you know better than they do what's best for America.
(Thanks Stephen.)
