On a Personal Note III

The "retinal and vitreous" specialist I saw yesterday morning in Pittsburgh has a very positive outlook for me. He gave my eye a much more extensive and thorough examination than the optometrist had on Monday. And he said, "I've seen this before". I gather from the way the other doctor had reacted on Monday that he had not seen anything quite like this before; thus, his concern.

The specialist called it a macular aneurism, and said that it happens not only to people "our age" (he looks to be in his forties, too) but even to younger people. A blood vessel in the eye bursts, more or less spontaneously, and they don't really know what causes that to happen. ("It's not anything you did, and it's not anything you didn't do," the specialist said.) And there is nothing to do for it — except to wait until things clear up by themselves. And he seemed wholly satisfied that that's what will happen with time.

And that, Faithful Reader, is news as good as I could have gotten. :-) I appreciate all your prayers.

For the time being, looking through my left eye is like looking through red seaweed. It's very annoying, to say the least. The area in the center of my vision that was partly occluded has already grown smaller: I think the blood in that area must be draining downwards. I'm going to try to rest my eyes as much as I can for a few more days, partly because they were put through such a workout by two eye doctors, Monday and Tuesday.
