The European Left's Anti-Americanism Geoffrey Wheatcroft glances, Jan. 11, at a new John Le Carré novel, and casts this out for our enlightment: .... A large part of the European left spent a large part of the 20th century hating the United States not because it had economic inequality or Jim Crow but because it did not have show trials, labor camps and the other appurtenances of "actually existing socialism." ....
