Prayers for the Novena

To use, if desired, with the Litany and the Intentions.

For the Universal Church

God our Father, by the promise you made in the life, death and resurrection of Christ your Son, you bring together in your Spirit, from all the nations, a people to be your own. Keep the Church faithful to its mission: may it be a leaven in the world renewing us in Christ, and transforming us into your family. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Number 1, Appendix III, pp. 1956ff, current volume of Liturgy of the Hours)

For the Local Church

God our Father, in all the churches scattered throughout the world you show forth the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. Through the gospel and the eucharist bring your people together in the Holy Spirit and guide us in your love. Make us a sign of your love for all people, and help us to show forth the living presence of Christ in the world, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Number 5, Appendix III)

For the Spread of the Gospel

Father, you will your Church to be the sacrament of salvation for all peoples. Make us feel more urgently the call to work for the salvation of all men, until you have made us all one people. Inspire the hearts of all your people to continue the saving work of Christ everywhere until the end of the world. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Number 15, Appendix III)

For Pastoral or Spiritual Meetings

Lord, pour out on us the spirit of understanding, truth, and peace. Help us to strive with all our hearts to know what is pleasing to you, and when we know your will make us determined to do it. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Number 16, Appendix III)

For Pastoral or Spiritual Meetings

God our Father, your Son promised to be with all who gather in his name. Make us aware of his presence among us and fill us with his grace, mercy, and peace, so that we may live in truth and love. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Number 17, Appendix III)

For Any Need

God our Father, our stength in adversity, our health in weakness, our comfort in sorrow, be merciful to your people. As you have given us the punishment we deserve, give us also new life and hope as we rest in your kindness. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Number 26, Appendix III)

For Any Need

All-powerful Father, God of mercy, look kindly on us in our suffering. Ease our burden and make our faith strong that we may always have confidence and trust in your fatherly care. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Number 27, Appendix III)

For Charity

Lord, fill our hearts with the spirit of your charity, that we may please you by our thoughts, and love you in our brothers and sisters. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Number 32, Appendix III)

For Promoting Harmony

God our Father, source of unity and love, make your faithful people one in heart and mind that your Church may live in harmony, be steadfast in its profession of faith, and secure in unity. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
