Blogworthies XIX

Because The Blog from the Core simply can't cover everything.

Noteworthy entries @ Power Line (thrice), Catholic Analysis, Inkwell, little green footballs, Catholic and Enjoying It, Dynamist Blog, New England Republican, INDC Journal, Vociferous Yawpings, Right Wing News, Outside the Beltway (twice), National Center Blog, Discriminations, Silent Running, The Curt Jester, and Dyspeptic Mutterings.

This week's Blogworthies number more than they usually do — typically 12, at the most — because of the extraordinary events of the week.

Thanks of a grateful nation... and beyond and Americans Pay Their Respects and Reagan Country @ Power Line:

[Photos of Reagan-related events this week.]

Peggy Noonan on Ronald Reagan @ Catholic Analysis:

Especially in light of the Clinton years, the title of Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan's biography of Reagan says it all: When Character Was King (Penguin Books, 2001). Noonan was a former Reagan speech writer who worked on some of Reagan's most memorable speeches. She is also a strong Catholic and admirer of John Paul II.
The book is one of those that you will eagerly wish to read through as quickly as possible because of its gripping personal anecdotes. Noonan likes the personal, as most of us do, and so she does not disappoint us....

Ronald Reagan’s America: At Its Formal Best Yesterday @ Inkwell:

I’m of accord with The Other Charlotte: Who says America can’t do formal? (See "In the Order of Sacrifice," today below). I myself was standing yesterday afternoon at the intersection of Constitution Avenue and Fourth Street, three blocks from the Capitol, when they came by: the marching bands and their drumbeats, the units of military men and women proud in dress uniforms, and then the caisson with its six black horses and its flag-wrapped coffin and following behind, the saddled and riderless horse. Later I read that the riding boots placed backwards in the stirrups on that horse, symbolizing that the last ride had already been taken, were Ronald Reagan’s own....

"Nothing But Respect" @ little green footballs:

LGF reader “reaganite” has the singular honor of being on the Secret Service security detail for the funeral of Ronald Reagan; here is his account of yesterday’s procession: ....

My long reply to a Jewish guy's questions about Christianity @ Catholic and Enjoying It:

He's in italics. I'm plain vanilla: ....

In Memoriam: Ronald Reagan @ Dynamist Blog:

A funny thing happened during the Reagan era. Young people became Republicans. Not all of them, of course, but a plurality. It was strange. After all, everyone knows you're supposed to be liberal and idealistic when you're young. You're supposed to vote for people like Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale.
Yeah, right....

Tom Brokaw Interviews President Bush @ New England Republican:

Last night while flipping channels, I came across the tail end of the Tom Brokaw interview with President Bush in Normandy, France. While Brokaw repeatedly tried to catch him in a gotcha moment, the President came across as thoughtful and gave well-reasoned answers. The interview was much better than the Meet the Press interview of a few months ago.
Since I had missed the beginning, I decided to go to the NBC site to see if the video was available. As I watched the video, I also read the transcript. Although it was not my intent, this allowed me to see what had been edited out of the video. I was not surprised to see that whole questions and answers had not been used in the video. However, I was surprised to see that important portions from the middle of some of the President's answers had been deleted out, in some cases removing points that helped the President present his side to the American people. Viewers of the video would have had no idea that the answers were shortened unless they had read along with the transcript as I had.
I have posted the transcript from the interview below and I have bolded the portions that were not shown in the video. I have also interspersed some of my thoughts as well....

INDC Journal Interviews Michael Berg @ INDC Journal:

On Saturday I attended International ANSWER's latest "EMERGENCY MOBILIZATION" to protest the Bush administration's "criminal wars, occupations, torture and assault." According the flyer, thousands of protestors would "Speak Truth to Power" in a march from the White House to Donald Rumsfeld's front lawn. The highlight of the event was to be a celebrity speech by Michael Berg, the father of terror victim Nick Berg. Given Mr. Berg's recent rhetoric espousing what he regards as the Bush administration's culpability in his son's death, I saw the rally as a good opportunity to ask him a few questions....

June 6, 1997 @ Vociferous Yawpings:

The clock went off at 6 just like always. When my wife woke up she said she was having contractions. That was to be expected as she was officially due the next day. I called my mom and put her on standby, and called work and told them that I would likely be a bit busy that day. What an understatement.
By the time I got out of the shower the contractions were well under five minutes apart. I called my mother and told her to get moving, grabbed something to eat, and got the stuff together....

My 10 Favorite Reagan Quotes @ Right Wing News:

10) The ultimate determinate in the struggle now going on for the world will not be bombs and rockets but a test of wills and ideas - a trial of spiritual resolve; the values we hold, the beliefs we cherish and the ideas to which we are dedicated....

More Reagan Tributes @ Outside the Beltway:

The Big Media is incredibly slow by blog standards. Another round of Reagan tributes has hit with today’s papers; I suspect we’ll be getting them for a while....

Ronald Reagan Tributes @ Outside the Beltway:

As one would expect, the major media have several tributes and reflections marking the passing of former President Ronald Reagan. (See this post from yesterday for the blogger tributes.) While they include criticism, most have emphasized the positive this morning. I’m sure that will change over the next few days....

"I've Seen Many Tears Today in the Eyes of Big Strong Soldiers As We Watch the News Coverage of Reagan's Death" @ National Center Blog:

U.S. Army Spc. Joe Roche has sent us an e-mail from Baghdad about President Ronald Reagan. I'm publishing the whole thing: ....

A Deal For The NAACP @ Discriminations:

There he goes again. For the second time, NAACP Chairman Julian Bond blasts Republicans as terrorists. (Thanks to Stuart Buck.)
"Their idea of equal rights is the American flag and the Confederate swastika flying side by side," Bond told a cheering audience. "They've written a new constitution for Iraq and ignore the Constitution here at home. They draw their most rabid supporters from the Taliban wing of American politics. Now they want to write bigotry back into the Constitution."
The good news here is that Bond obviously thinks the terrorists are REALLY, REALLY evil if he equates Republicans with them. Maybe he can be enlisted to support the war after all....

Allied Operations Stumble on French Coast: SHAEF HQ - 1400 June 6th 1944 @ Silent Running:

On scene information remains sketchy as the apparent disaster on the French coast unfolds. Fragments of information are becoming available here at SHAEF HQ that illustrate the poor preparation that appears to be emerging as a hallmark of this operation. While sources on the staff remain optimistic, available information from the scene of battle appear to contradict any impulse to celebrate.
Reports have surfaced hinting at a situation of utter tragedy for the desperately brave paratroopers who have been virtually abandoned behind stiff German lines. Some units are known to be on the ground, cut off and fighting for their very lives. This, after being inexcusably scattered across the northern French countryside, often miles from the areas they were told they would land. Fatal blunders made by Allied planners appear to have doomed many of our finest young men unneccessarily....

U.S.S. Jimmy Carter (SSN 23) @ The Curt Jester:

The Department of Defense announced June 3 that the Navy’s newest Seawolf-class nuclear-powered submarine Jimmy Carter will be christened June 5 during an 11 a.m. ET ceremony at General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Conn....

"Andrew Sullivan liked the homily," I thought... @ Dyspeptic Mutterings:

So, of course, I didn't.
This is "insightful"?
Yeesh. Then I'd hate to see his example of cliched pablum. It's the same ol' inclusivity-as-next-to-godliness, don't-get-hung-up-on-dogma, Thou-Shalt-Not-Be-Self-Righteous-Like-Those-Conservatives, All-That-Matters-Is-Community uber-twaddle that's been spewed for the past two generations....
