The Forgotten Skirmish The 250th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Necessity. Saturday, July 3, 2004. Growing up in southwestern Pennsylvania cannot help but include at least one, if not many, visits to Ft. Necessity National Battlefield in the Laurel Highlands. About 2,800 people 200 or so reenactors and 2,600 or so spectators commemorated the opening battle of the French and Indian War, at which Lt. Col. George Washington capitulated to a superior force of French soldiers and American Indians the only surrender of his military career. Battle Reenactment
