Senator John Forbes Mitty?

Seeing as how I've already impugned the sanity of one Democratic nominee for the presidency of the United States of America, I shall refrain from making it two.

Another, however, does not refrain.

"Practice Makes Perfect"

A nice article in the Tribune-Review, Aug. 8, starts with a profile of my neighbor, Beckie Evans:

The school bell isn't ringing quite yet, but plenty of students at area high schools are spending time on campus getting ready for the school year.
Rebecca Evans, of Roscoe, wakes to the sound of her alarm clock between 6 and 6:30 a.m. to feed her cat, have a bowl of cereal and get ready for a day of drills, marching and fine-tuning the California Area High School Band....

Beckie is on the right, though the pop-up on the Trib's page says she's on the left. And, I'm telling you, the picture does her no justice whatever: you can't tell from it that she is Gorgeous Beyond Words.

She's cool. She's very smart and industrious. She's one of our lectors, too.

Newman Against the Liberals

Ven. John Henry Newman died this day, August 11, 1890.

In 1978, Michael Davies brought out Newman Against the Liberals: 25 Classic Sermons, his selection from the cardinal's Parochial and Plain Sermons that refute "liberal" religious positions — that is, positions that deny the divine revelation, the supernatural, and the dogmatic in religion.

Here follow these sermons at Newman Reader.

Order by Publication

See also Lenten Related Sermons and Easter Related Sermons.

And see also On August 11, 1890 and On Newman's Anniversary....

P.S. From this mention of Michael Davies, nothing should be construed about my opinion(s) of him or his ideas or writings. I merely cite him as the editor of a specific collection of Newman's sermons.

"How I Know That The King James Bible Is The Word Of God"

I was reminded this morning of one of my all-time favorite webpages. Enjoy. :-)

Amber Frey

I can't say that I pay much attention to the trial of the murderer Scott Peterson. But it's hard to be connected without seeing and/or hearing something about it. Like, every day.

It seems to me that, so far, Amber Frey's testimony can be summed up as follows:

Sure, I'm a stupid blonde slut. But, do I look good?

P.S. I think the inordinate amount of attention paid to the Peterson & Bryant & Hacking stories just goes to show how unserious America is about the war on terrorism.
