"Through the Darkness in South Dakota"

A poem by John Hearn.

Through the Darkness in South Dakota

The sun sets in knotted darkness,
Roiling clouds foreshortened to the stratosphere,
Bridging that awful leap of air 'twixt red soil
and the magnet furies of the sun's breath.
Rain gathers as the vapors shed their heat
to winds hurtling, laughing up
through the frigid zones of thinning sky.
And FLASH!........... BOOM!
The connection is made—
life-giving and terrible, thrilling and terrifying.
Oh, let me live to see another!
