"Denying Holy Communion A Case History" A lengthy article by Bishop Rene Henry Gracida, DD, Bishop Emeritus of Corpus Christi, Texas: .... Relativism is a philosophical term describing a theory that conceptions of truth and moral values are not based on objectivity and the absolute, but instead are baseless and grounded on that which is relative and subjective to the persons or groups holding them. I suggest that those who maintain that they cannot support the refusing of Holy Communion to pro-abortion politicians because the time of the distribution of Holy Communion is a time of unity in the Body of Christ are indeed relativizers of the objectively established precepts. Further, their belief that it would therefore be wrong to make it a time of confrontation and discord by refusing Holy Communion to anyone is indeed relativizing the precepts, but moreover, emptying them of their substance as well. Those who relativize the belief that it would be wrong to make the time of receiving Holy Communion a time of confrontation and discord are guilty of relativizing the objectively based precepts, which are based on Ultimate Truth Himself. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. To relativize or compromise the objectively based precepts is to directly relativize Truth Himself!.... (Thanks, Patrick.) "Surge Protector" The other day I mentioned how Kerry has been tagged as a great debater since his college days. Since then, I've seen that the Dems are downplaying this and talking up Bush as a good debater. Yoo hoo! Alice! Have you seen the mad hatter? The Democrats are doing this, of course, to lessen expectations for their guy and raise expectations for Bush. They must realize that Kerry is not going to come out of the debates looking better than he went in. Actually, the spin from both directions has become rather dizzying: the Republicans are now talking up Kerry as a debater, too. Likewise, I think, to lower expectations for their own guy. In a related matter, Mike Murphy writes at The Weekly Standard, Sep. 28: A sure bet in this campaign is that the media will write a big October comeback story for John Kerry. It is evitable for three reasons. First, the media works in a pack that is happiest when following a simple narrative. Second, from moribund to miracle campaigner is Kerry's tiresome myth turned worn-out cliché. Third, this is indeed a tight race and as with any incumbent seeking reelection the undecided vote will break heavily against Bush, which will make Kerry look like he is surging late. (Even hapless Michael Dukakis had such a late surge.) .... I disagree, though, with his notion that "as with any... reelection". Hasn't anybody noticed that, since 9/11, all the records are being re-written? Everybody expected the Republicans to take a beating in the Nov. 2002 general election, because that's what has happened historically but they gained seats in both the House and the Senate. And John Kerry got hit with a double-whammy this summer: neither his announcement of his VP running mate, nor his nominating convention, gave him any detectable bounce in the polls an unprecedented double failure. And Bush got a big bounce from his nominating convention that nobody but unknown bloggers was expecting. In another related vein, see also Kerry's situation is hopeless.
