Blogworthies XXXI Because The Blog from the Core simply can't cover everything. Noteworthy entries @ Belmont Club, Patterico's Pontifications, The Corner, Hoystory.com, Vociferous Yawpings, cut on the bias, Dust in the Light, Instapundit.com, Hit & Run, HerbEly, Thrown Back, Catholic Ragemonkey, Right Voices, Galley Slaves, and Power Line. The Shot Heard Round the World @ Belmont Club: The echoes of the big Internet bang which annihilated a 60 Minutes story in under 12 hours are still resounding. The key riffs apparently started at the FreeRepublic and Powerline and as Samizdata notes, the distributed intelligence of the Internet took over. Under the scrutiny of thousands of analysts, the CBS story began to melt down. The idea that the intellectual resources of a major news agency are always superior to the blogosphere is given by lie by citing these two separate lines of analysis which, though proceeding from different starting points, both led to the conclusion that the documents which Dan Rather relied on to question the Bush National Guard record were faked.... NPR and Media Matters Can't Tell Time @ Patterico's Pontifications: It's a two-fer tonight: evidence of incredible carelessness at both NPR and Media Matters.... From Ben Bradlee to Dan Rather @ The Corner: I see that CBS is gonna stand by its story, as well they should. To do otherwise would sabotage the high values of modern journalism, which include the stern injunction to never tell the suckers what is really going on.... The original document @ Hoystory.com: The blogosphere, with the help of several experts, have determined that CBS News' Killian documents are not the product of a 1970s era typewriter. Using my extensive journalistic contacts, I've confirmed what many know: the documents were created using Microsoft Word. But that's not all of the story. I have been provided with one of the original Killian documents. It turns out it was retyped for readability.... NPR reminded me several times this morning (whether I wanted them to or not) that the number of US casualties in Iraq has crossed the 1,000 mark. One of their experts said that Americans would be forced forced, mind you to reassess their positions on the war as a result of this milestone. I am, of course, happy to oblige.... Hey, I'm in the big lights! @ cut on the bias: Well, maybe not, but it's cool nonetheless!... That Conservative Media @ Dust in the Light: The point has probably been made elsewhere, although it's the sort of perspective reminder of which one tends to lose sight over time and in the heat of discussion, but the argument over whether the mainstream media is biased might really be over the degree of leftishness that represents the objective center. The East Coast is discouragingly west if one is adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, after all.... "Isn't strange that the biggest difference between the Bush National Guard stories and the Kerry Vietnam controversy is that, in the President's case, it's the major media dogging the story to death?" What could possibly account for the difference?... Not-So-Scary Tactics @ Hit & Run: Much as it pains me to defend Dick Cheney, it seems to me as though his alleged "scare tactics" vis a vis the threat of terror if we make the "wrong choice" on Election Day rest on a straightforward misreading of his statement.... Four Poems about Pride and One About Lost Love @ HerbEly: My mother, Marie Schmitt Ely died from leukemia in April of 1946, when I was barely 5 years old. In 1933 she graduated from High School in Michigan and moved to New Mexico with her family. The move led to a broken romance with a young man who remained in Michigan. She wrote several poems about it, reflecting on how her pride troubled that relationship.... Terri's "Exit Protocol" Discovered In Hospice Documents @ Thrown Back: Cheryl Ford, RN, a nurse from Tampa who has been very active in the efforts to save Terri's life, recently undertook, on behalf of the Schindlers, a review of medical records from when Terri was first admitted to Woodside Hospice. Woodside Hospice is run by Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. It is of interest to note that Michael Schiavo's attorney, George Felos, was a member of the Board of Directors of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast until the Terri Schiavo case began to attract widespread public attention a few years ago. In her research, Ms. Ford found a document titled "Exit Protocol" in Terri's file. The document is on Hospice of the Florida Suncoast "Patient Care Notes" stationery, and is dated April 19, 2001. This document lays out, in clinical detail, the procedures to be followed in bringing about Terri's death by starvation and dehydration.... More "Burger King" Catholicism @ Catholic Ragemonkey: One of the things that many priests told me before I was ordained was that they would rather do 10 funerals than 1 wedding. I always thought that this was a bit odd, but I tucked it away as something to evaluate once I became a priest. While I am not yet at a point to concur with my priestly brothers' opinion, I am starting to appreciate why this is the case. For funerals the family are understandably mourning the loss of a loved one. The grief and shock of the death, plus all the decisions that seem to need to be made "right now," often leaves them wanting someone to tell them what to do, so when you sit down to plan the funeral Mass (or, what seems to becoming more popular here in NJ to my displeasure, a service at the funeral home) the families often are very willing to let you guide them in what to do. Of course the one exception is the question of eulogies, but even that is often easily address so that something consistent with the Church's Burial Rites and tasteful is done.... What Liberal Media??? @ Right Voices (embedded ellipses in original): The AP makes this headline: Audience boos as Bush offers best wishes for Clinton’s recovery. Except I was there... at that particular Bush Rally. I called my Mom and asked her.... “Do you remember any boo’ing?” She said, “No.” .... Booing the AP @ Galley Slaves: When the AP story about a Republican crowd booing President Bush's well-wishes for Bill Clinton first broke at 2:12 p.m., the story carried the byline of Tom Hays. After coming under fire, the AP pulled the story down.... The Associated Press Makes It Up @ Power Line: I've long said that the Associated Press is the nation's worst source of media bias. But this one, frankly, blows me away.... Lane Core Jr. CIW P Sat. 09/11/04 09:01:11 AM |
