Blogworthies XXXVII Because The Blog from the Core simply can't cover everything. Noteworthy entries @ Eutychus Fell: Becoming Catholic, Dappled Things, Lead and Gold, Dyspeptic Mutterings, I love Jet Noise, Recta Ratio, SunnyBlog.com, The Belgravia Dispatch, The Mudville Gazette, BeldarBlog, I love Jet Noise (again), The Corner, ProfessorBainbridge.com, The Command Post, Sed Contra, Davids Medienkritik, and The Command Post (again). Bill Cosby gave a tough talk to a school in Milwaukee yesterday. @ Eutychus Fell: Becoming Catholic: I think I'll memorize some of the lines and use them on my own kids.... Homily on Christian Death @ Dappled Things: When a person is born, we bring him into church, and with the splashing of water and the lighting of candles, we welcome him as a Christian into the world. When a person dies, we bring him back into church, and with the splashing of water and the lighting of candles, we send him as a Christian into the next world. The baptismal liturgy and the funeral liturgy have more than a little in common, standing as they do like the bookends of a whole Catholic lifetime that is held between them.... Robert Hanssen: 9/11's Forgotten Man @ Lead and Gold: I searched the 9/11 Commission's Report for any mention of FBI agent turned spy Robert Hanssen. None turned up. This is a serious oversight for two reasons. First, Hanssen's arrest and interrogation was a major event for the FBI in early 2001. Second, some of the secrets he betrayed ended up in Al Qaeda's hands.... A tale of two altar boys. @ Dyspeptic Mutterings: I was trying to figure out why the constant references, like that of Mo Dowd, to the junior Senator from Massachusetts' tenure as an altar boy was so grating.... Polls, Again @ I love Jet Noise: You all know what I think about polls by now. While I'm not a professional statistician, I do work with statistics and have a fairly pronounced level of cynicism about how easily numbers can be manipulated. My main beefs about political polls are these: .... By the Pricking of My Thumbs / Something Wicked This Way Comes @ Recta Ratio: .... I just happened to remember that it is October 20th. Who can't remember feeling the way Bradbury describes as childhood Halloweens approached?... If Bush had not invaded Iraq @ SunnyBlog.com: Democrat Presidential nominee John Kerry delivered a speech today condemning President Bush for failing to invade Iraq in the follow-up of military action against the Talaban and Al Qaeda in Afghanastan. "Leaving this tyrant in power in contravention of numerous United Nations resolutions is unconscionable," Kerry told the Veterans of Foreign Wars. "He has left available a base of operations and a source of supply and money." .... Wanted: Dead or Alive @ The Belgravia Dispatch: Someone got to B.D. via this Google search today (too lazy to click through? The search: "bin laden has not been heard from since"). Well, since when? Since May 7th of this year when an (unauthenticated) audiotape emerged purporting to be UBL offering gold in return for Jerry Bremer's assasination. Pretty piddling fare for Osama, no? Reduced to offering grams of gold for the head of a mere American proconsul? Note that was about half a year ago.... Armored Cowboys @ The Mudville Gazette: The sidewalks of my dusty town are made of wood and blood, rising up above loose sands to ease the burden of walking armored from point A to B. Here where the sidewalk ends a man not long ago a boy stands vigil in a slapped-together shack; at the sound of heavy boots on wood he rises and renders greetings. Return that greeting with a smile and present your bona fides, nod and sincerely wish a good day as he waves you on.... SCOTUS decision today on Texas redistricting case is no big deal @ BeldarBlog: In a two-sentence order released today, the United States Supreme Court vacated the January 6, 2004, decision of the special three-judge Voting Rights Act panel from last January, pending before it under the name Jackson v. Perry, that had rejected challenges to the Texas Legislature's 2003 congressional redistricting. The Supreme Court returned the Perry case to that same special three-judge panel "for further consideration in light of Vieth v. Jubelirer," the Supreme Court's own April 2004 decision in a redistricting case from Pennsylvania.... Great Wartime Speeches @ I love Jet Noise (italics in original): Oftimes when courage is at its lowest ebb, a great leader comes along as if sent by the Gods! to stiffen our spines and gladden our hearts with stirring words of wisdom.... New York Review of Lefties @ The Corner: A Martian seeking to understand current U.S. intellectual life might pick up a copy of The New York Review of Books under the illusion that it offers a wide-ranging survey of the literary scene by talented writers with a good range of outlooks and opinions. Well, let's see. The current (11/4/04) issue of NYRB includes a round-up of views on the coming election from the magazine's contributors. You can get the flavor of the thing from the following quotes. I have included all the contributors whose views appear in this symposium.... Running the World on Faith @ ProfessorBainbridge.com: I used to admire conservative columnist Bruce Bartlett, but based on what he told the NYT I've lost a lot of respect for him: .... Full Text Of My Speech To AP Managing Editors @ The Command Post (ellipsis in original): I’ve posted the full text of my speech to the Associated Press Managing Editors below (most of which is in the extended entry). Note that the audience was NOT the AP (although some members of the AP were there) … it was the managing editors of major newspapers that subscribe to the AP wire service.... Reaction To The Gonzaga Talk @ Sed Contra: More reaction from the Gonzaga University talk earlier in October.... Battle of the Blogs: Medienkritik vs. George Soros @ Davids Medienkritik: I recently wrote George Soros an email expressing disagreement with an item on his blog, and surprisingly, he published my email and posted a reply on his blog.... A Jewish liberal New Yorker on why she is voting for Bush @ The Command Post: This essay was written by a friend of mine who would like to remain anonymous. A busy working mom with a couple of kids, she reads blogs when she can, but doesn’t post herself. I find her essay eloquently applies ancient Jewish values to the challenges we face today. I am pleased to use my access to Command Post to bring her words to a wider public.... Lane Core Jr. CIW P Sat. 10/23/04 07:44:48 AM |
