Blogging Break

My sinuses/allergies have been acting up since Friday, and I am getting worn down. I'm going to take a break for a couple of days.

"January 1, 1829"

Random Poetry List I

January 1, 1829

Winter is come again. The sweet south west
Is a forgotten wind, and the strong earth
Has laid aside its mantle to be bound
By the frost fetter. There is not a sound
Save of the skaiter's heel, and there is laid
An icy finger on the lip of streams,
And the clear icicle hangs cold and still,
And the snow-fall is noiseless as a thought.
Spring has a rushing sound, and Summer sends
Many sweet voices with its odors out,
And Autumn rustleth its decaying robe
With a complaining whisper. Winter's dumb!
God made his ministry a silent one,
And He has given him a foot of steel
And an unlovely aspect, and a breath
Sharp to the senses—and we know that He
Tempereth well, and hath a meaning hid
Under the shadow of his hand. Look up!
And it shall be interpreted—Your home
Hath a temptation now. There is no voice
Of waters with beguiling for your ear,
And the cool forest and the meadows green
Witch not your feet away; and in the dells
There are no violets, and upon the hills
There are no sunny places to lie down.
You must go in, and by your cheerful fire
Wait for the offices of love, and hear
Accents of human tenderness, and feast
Your eye upon the beauty of the young.
It is a season for the quiet thought,
And the still reckoning with thyself. The year
Gives back the spirits of its dead, and time
Whispers the history of its vanished hours;
And the heart, calling its affections up,
Counteth its wasted ingots. Life stands still
And settles like a fountain, and the eye
Sees clearly through its depths, and noteth all
That stirred its troubled waters. It is well
That Winter with the dying year should come!

Random Poetry List Begins

I have mentioned a time or two that I used to have an informal e-mail list to which I occasionally sent a poem, for several years, which was effectively rendered obsolete when I began The Blog from the Core.

Being something of a packrat, I still have all those e-mails. This year, I will blog each poem on the month & day it was originally sent.

[Follow-up: Random Poetry List Concludes.]

"CBS Ousts 4 For Bush Guard Story"

Here's the news as reported by CBS, today:

Four CBS News employees, including three executives, have been ousted for their role in preparing and reporting a disputed story about President Bush’s National Guard service.
The action was prompted by the report of an independent panel that concluded that CBS News failed to follow basic journalistic principles in the preparation and reporting of the piece. The panel also said CBS News had compounded that failure with a “rigid and blind” defense of the 60 Minutes Wednesday report.
Asked to resign were Senior Vice President Betsy West, who supervised CBS News primetime programs; 60 Minutes Wednesday Executive Producer Josh Howard; and Howard’s deputy, Senior Broadcast Producer Mary Murphy. The producer of the piece, Mary Mapes, was terminated.
The correspondent on the story, CBS News anchor Dan Rather, is stepping down as anchor of CBS Evening News....

The action was prompted by the report of an independent panel that concluded that CBS News failed to follow basic journalistic principles in the preparation and reporting of the piece. The panel also said CBS News had compounded that failure with a “rigid and blind” defense of the 60 Minutes Wednesday report. We didn't need no steenkin' investigation to tell us that.

And, in case you are worried, Faithful Reader, do not fret. West, Howard, Murphy, and Mapes will not be outcast for incompetence and perfidy, their families homeless & starving in the streets. O, no! Their comrades in the Democratic Establishment — whether the media branch or the political branch — will not let them suffer very long. True, they failed; but, they had the best of intentions — to rid the country of the infamous Adolf W. Bushitler. And their desires shall not go unrequited. Maybe their future career(s) will not be heralded by fanfare that will ever reach our eyes and ears; but, those who have given up so much for the cause will surely not be left to languish.

P.S. See Sensible Mom's CBS Investigation:

.... Their disinterest in objectively vetting the story is indicative of their lack of respect for President Bush. That's bias pure and simple. After all, if you respected someone and a potentially damaging story surfaced about him, wouldn't you research every angle thoroughly before reporting it? They didn't do that, not because they wanted to report the story first (Mary Mapes had been looking into it for more that 4 years), but because they wanted to inflict damage on President Bush.

Think of it this way. What do you think the chances are that forged documents indicating John Forbes Kerry had disobeyed a direct order and used influential connections to keep him as much out of harm's way as possible when he was in Vietnam — what do you think the chances are that Mary Mapes and Dan Rather would have rushed a story onto the air about them?

I know, I know: the only things that would have had less chance of getting on the air at CBS would have been absolutely real documents indicating John Forbes Kerry had disobeyed a direct order and used influential connections to keep him as much out of harm's way as possible when he was in Vietnam........

Recent Blog Outages

As were some (other) popular weblogs, The Blog from the Core was unavailable for a couple of long stretches over the weekend, as explained by RatherBiased.com:

Hosting Matters, the web presence provider of many popular blogs such as Instapundit, Little Green Footballs, Captain's Quarters, and Powerline has been having a bad few weeks. One of the company's critical servers broke down a few days ago taking out many blogger sites. In addition, HM has been the target of several denial of service attacks....

Coldness in the Fire

Ven. Louis of Granada, O.P.

Thanks to Mark for sending this:

If love has such a power to arouse more love, why do I not love Thee, my God, with my whole heart? How can I resist the great force of Thy love? How can I be deaf and insensible to the voices of all creation that call me to this love? The cold, hard stone gives off sparks if it is struck with a piece of steel. Will my heart be so obdurate that in spite of all the blows of all creation not even a spark of love will fly from it? If there is nothing else in the world more powerful for igniting fire, why does not the fire of Thy divine love inflame my heart?
If thou, my God, art a fire of infinite love, why is not my heart inflamed when it is in Thy presence? What coldness is this that Thy fire cannot ignite it? O King of glory, do not permit such a monstrosity in the world that I should not be inflamed by that great fire. Inflame this cold heart, my Lord, this heart colder than snow and harder than ice, so that I may love Thee with all my strength as Thou dost command and dost deserve to be loved. Make this love burn always and for all eternity. Amen. (Summa of the Christian Life, Volume 1, Chapter 8)
