Lenten Friday Blogstinence 2005 I won't be blogging on the Fridays of Lent this year. Lane Core Jr. CIW P Thu. 02/10/05 09:11:16 PM |
"Where's the Rage, Catholic Men?" Thanks to Margaret for sending Rod Dreher's column at DMN, Feb. 8: .... "I loathe cruelty and injustice," Teddy Roosevelt once wrote to a friend. "To see a boy or man torture something helpless whether in the shape of a small boy or little girl or dumb animal makes me rage." It's fine to be conventionally virtuous, he said, but if these qualities are unsupported by "something more virile, they may tend to evil rather than good." "The man who merely possesses these traits, and in addition is timid and shirks effort, attracts and deserves a good deal of contempt," wrote Mr. Roosevelt. By that chivalrous understanding of manhood, we Catholic men – bishops, priests and laymen – are a pretty contemptible lot these days.... "In all times the laity have been the measure of the Catholic spirit; they saved the Irish Church three centuries ago and they betrayed the Church in England," said the great Cardinal Newman. By that standard, the American Catholic spirit is passive and demoralized. We cannot let this stand. The church, if it is to be saved, will not be delivered, in the main, by today's clergy. I used to think it'd be great if my boys grew up to be priests. Now I'd rather they joined the U.S. Marines: men with chests, men with backbones, men who know evil when they see it, and who aren't afraid to fight. I am privileged to count a few priests like that as friends. They are true warriors of faith. They are also truly rare.... The Newman quotation is from Duties of Catholics Towards the Protestant View in Lectures on the Present Position of Catholics in England. It was also quoted by Fr. C. John McCloskey in Laity, Priests, and Holiness. Lane Core Jr. CIW P Thu. 02/10/05 09:08:47 PM |
Re: Does America's Military Torture and Murder Journalists? Michelle Malkin has an extensive update, today, including some lengthy quotations. Also, Ed Morrissey is still all over Easongate. Here are just some of the updates from yesterday and today:

Re: What a Contemptible, Self-Righteous Lying Gasbag II And I still want a refund. As related by Power Line, today, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune runs a letter from James Watt and a correction, of sorts, from Bill Moyers: .... And the Strib prints this letter by Bill Moyers: In a recent speech that I made on religion and the environment ("There is no tomorrow," Jan. 30 Op Ex), I made a mistake in quoting remarks attributed to James Watt, former secretary of interior, by the online journal Grist without confirming them myself.Because those or similar quotes had also appeared through the years in many other publications in the Washington Post and Time, for example, as well as in several books that I consulted in preparing my speech I too easily assumed their legitimacy.Despite their widespread currency, I should have checked their accuracy before using them. Grist and the Washington Post have now published corrections concerning the quote attributed to Watt in 1981.I talked to Mr. Watt on the phone and expressed my own regret at using a quote that I had not myself confirmed. I also told him that I continue to find his policies as secretary of the interior abysmally at odds with what I, as well as other Christians, understand to be our obligation to be stewards of the earth.Bill Moyers, New York. In other words, Moyers says the quote was fake but accurate, and in any event, Watt is a lousy Christian. Moyers is a disgrace. He not only misquoted Watt, he completely misrepresented his environmental policies. And virtually every other "fact" in Moyers' hate-filled tirade against conservative Christians was a lie, as was its central thesis.... Eason Jordan and... Teresa Heinz Remember when Teresa Heinz (Kerry) told Colin McNickle to "shove it"? Heinz had referred to some "un-American traits", and McNickle asked her what she was talking about. Though no fewer than three video tapes surfaced over the next day or two showing that she had quite clearly and deliberately said "un-American traits", she lied and blew up at McNickle for calling her on it. At the time, I opined that she was accustomed to saying such things when she thought everybody in earshot was completely sympathetic. And she was stunned when she realized that her words had fallen on some ears that were not automatically sympathetic. So also Eason Jordan, I think. I bet he has become accustomed to slandering America and Americans in fora of various kinds around the world, counting on a completely sympathetic crowd. He never dreamed that he was going to get called on it at Davos. Like Heinz (who has, by the way, dropped the "Kerry" from her name), he is trying to put the blame on the people who actually heard him. For explication of Jordan's behavior, see "The Berlin Wall's Revenge". P.S. I do not know Colin McNickle. P.P.S. Another good take here. Lane Core Jr. CIW P Thu. 02/10/05 08:18:56 AM |
We Want the Davos Video As you may have heard, Faithful Reader, the World Economic Forum does not intend to release the videotape of the Easongate Conference. Michelle Malkin provides some contact information to demand its release: .... I believe the most effective requests will be those that come from soldiers themselves and their families. Bloggers military bloggers in particular need to spread the word. Courtesy of Geraghty, here's the contact information: Mark Adams While you're at it, why not copy your request to Eason Jordan? His e-mail address is eason.jordan@turner.com. CNN's main phone number is (404) 827-1500. Ask for Eason Jordan and the operator will put you through to his voicemail. Be polite. Here is the text of the e-mail I've sent to Adams, copied to Jordan: Dear Mr. Adams: Please help Eason Jordan to clear his name by releasing the video of the Davos conference. Thank you. "The Berlin Wall's Revenge" Sometimes, one comes across a blog that is so profound and illuminating it merits an extraordinary notice all its own. (For instance.) For those, I am inaugurating a new category at The Blog from the Core: More Than Blogworthy. Though I may add already existing entries as time goes by, here is the new category's first entry: Nelson Acher's blog at EuroPundits, Tuesday: .... This newly ever-growing Western left, not only in Europe, but in Latin America and even in the US itself, has a clear goal: the destruction of the country and society that vanquished its dreams fifteen years ago. But it does not have, as in the old days of the Soviet Union, the hard power to accomplish this by itself. Thanks to this, all our leftist friends’ bets are now on radical Islam. What can they do to help it? Answer: tie down America’s superior strength with a million Liliputian ropes: legal ones, political ones, with propaganda and disinformation etc. Anything and everything will do. In the same way as the murderers of 911 used the West’s technology against itself, the contemporary left will do its best to turn democracy into a suicidal pact. This is already being done, obviously. The fight for Guantanamo Bay is, in many ways, as important as that for Baghdad. And, whenever a British born terrorist is released and sent back to the UK, to be joyfully acclaimed by the pages of “The Guardian”, “The Independent” or through the waves of the BBC, that fight is being lost. Radical Islam is being given one more tactical victory and the left’s strategy is being vindicated. There has been some talk recently about the probable inevitability of a nuclear attack on the mainland US in, say, the next ten or fifteen years. The Berlin Wall’s orphans are already busy creating the slogans, formulating the dogmas, writing down the articles and books that will allow them, when the worst happens, to lay all the blame on the victims, making retaliation as difficult as it can be. They’re carefully preparing their case and the court is already in session. Lane Core Jr. CIW P Thu. 02/10/05 07:35:25 AM |
