French Version of Novena for Michael Schiavo

Thanks to a reader for sending this French translation of the Novena for Michael Schiavo.

+ + + + +

Amen.

Notre Père…
Je vous salue Marie…
Gloire soit au Père…

To reiterate: contrary to some reports, I am not the author of the (English) novena prayer.

"Blind"

Random Poetry List XIII

Blind

   I cannot see;
Yet God gives shining dreams to me
Of rainbow and of golden-fruited tree.

   How many go
Who, seeing yet sightless, never know
How blue the ocean is, how white the snow.

   And I shall gaze
Enraptured on the Ray of Rays—
Brighter, perhaps, for all my darkened days.

The Battle of Iwo Jima

The sixtieth anniversary of the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi.

Sixty years ago, this month and next, the battle was raging on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima.

Sixty years ago today, the American flag was raised on Mt. Suribachi, long before the island came under American control. The second flag-raising was immortalized in the famous photograph by AP photographer Joe Rosenthal. (The first flag was smaller than the second.) Here and here are a lot of photos from Iwo Jima.

Here are the names of the Flag Raisers:

There are six Flag Raisers on the [Rosenthal] photo. Four in the front line and two in back. The front four are (left to right) Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley, John Bradley and Harlon Block. The back two are Michael Strank (behind Sousley) and Rene Gagnon (behind Bradley). Strank, Block and Sousley would die shortly afterwards. Bradley, Hayes and Gagnon became national heroes within weeks.

P.S. See JunkYardBlog for Bryan Preston's recent look at the island.

[Follow-up: Joe Rosenthal, RIP.]

Tell Gov. Bush to Help Terri Schindler Schiavo

Sunnye has started a petition to ask President George W. Bush to intervene to spare Terri's life. I don't think, however, it's any business of the president to interfere. (One of the problems we're dealing with is that government officials don't know the proper limits of their authority.)

I do think it's the business of the governor to intervene to save the life of an innocent. One of the reasons we have governors is to stand up to unjust judges. No?

Here is a Catholic Answers E-mail Message providing a lot of information, including contact information for Florida's governor, Jeb Bush:

E-mail: jeb.bush@myflorida.com
Phone: (850) 488-4441

And Oswald Sobrino blogged a terrific essay yesterday at Catholic Analysis.

Here follows my e-mail to the governor.

Dear Governor Bush:
I urge you to stand up for the life of Terri Schindler Schiavo.
Nobody has an obligation to obey an unjust law, nor does anybody have any obligation to obey an unjust judicial ruling. Where would the civil rights movement in this country have gotten had nobody defied unjust laws or judges?
One of the reasons we have governors, Gov. Bush, is to stand up to judges when they overstep their bounds. What kind of systems of checks & balances is it if judges always have the last word?
Stand up for Terri, Gov. Bush. Stand up for the separation of powers. Stand up for the authority of your own office as chief executive of the state. Stand up for justice. Stand up for Terri.
