Katrina: Response Timeline A monumental effort by Rick Moran at RightWing NutHouse. First, the timeline, which concludes with a few observations: .... This has been a clusterf**k from the get go on all levels and with a few unbelievably heroic exceptions – mostly the LA Fish and Wildlife employees who were out in boats rescuing people almost before the storm passed and our selfless military who performed with their usual spectacular competence and courage. I am convinced that any Commission or Congressional investigation – if even slightly impartial – will find enough stupidity, incompetence, panic, blame shifting, lying, and bureaucratic ass covering to sate the appetite for name calling and blame assigning of even the most partisan among us. This was a failure of leadership and competence. But it was also a failure of will. And for that, you need look no farther than the mirror in your bathroom, dearest readers. We elected this crew. We elected the Congresses over the past 25 years – Democratic and Republican – that failed to do the things necessary to make New Orleans safer.... He follows up with I Know What Went Wrong: After spending the last 48 hours reading and tabulating information about who, where, when, and what went wrong with Katrina relief, I’d like to proclaim myself an expert. That’s right. You see, these days, anyone can be an expert on anything. It doesn’t take much at all, just the cohones to come out and brag about how knowledgeable you are on any given subject. That said, I know exactly what went wrong with relief efforts in New Orleans. And surprisingly, it had very little to do with submerged busses, broken promises, missing National Guard troops, and most especially the race, economic status, or political preferencs of the victims. It was a disaster.... I will merely note that the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina gives a whole 'nother level of meaning to the old joke, commonly heard in the business world when dealing with less than perfect and accurate results: It's close enough for government work. "Why the Second Vatican Council Was a Good Thing & Is More Important Than Ever" By John Lamont at Philip Blosser's Musings of a Pertinacious Papist (brackets in original): In its June 2004 issue, the NOR [New Oxford Review] asked the following question apropos of an article in Crisis magazine by George Sim Johnston: "Johnston's subtitle is 'Why Vatican II Was Necessary.' We'd dearly like to know why it was. We can think of a few things that Vatican II did that were good and necessary but only a few and we doubt if an ecumenical council was necessary to accomplish them." This is an excellent question that needs an answer, and this article was written to take up the challenge posed by it. It will not attempt to show that the Second Vatican Council was necessary, because it wasn't the Church would have survived if it had never happened but rather that it was a good thing.... "Tribes" By Bill Whittle at Eject! Eject! Eject!: I’m generally an optimist, and it’s been my pleasure to be able to write mostly about the good and the noble things in our lives. But the events in the Gulf – of Mexico – have brought to a head a summer and a year that has been getting progressively uglier and more painful to watch. Who can not see the way the country has changed, not since 9/11, but before that – since the 2000 election? Who cannot feel the split, the division, that rips like a shredding sail on a broken mast, canvas tearing like the sound of musketry, as the rigging falls to the deck? This breaks my heart. It just breaks my heart into little pieces. I have said less and less as I see more and more, because deep in my core I still don’t want to believe that some Americans could willfully and consistently do such destructive things out of such petty and base motivations, things which in time will make the horrors of New Orleans look like a flea circus in a small tent, with the much larger carnival raging unseen in the background. I’ve taken sides in these essays, obviously – that’s what I do. But I have never, until now, felt the need to take the gloves off and really let fly. I always feared I would regret it, later. I still do. Only now, I fear I will regret it worse if I do not. So now we must look at Tribes.... P.S. This is entry 4,444 at The Blog from the Core. P.P.S. See also The Belmont Club.
