"Looting" Vs. "Finding" And, the remarkable speed in which aid is getting to the affected areas. I understand that some "celebrity" I never heard of, with the unlikely name of "Kanye West", went off script on an NBC telecast a Red Cross fundraiser last night. His remarks included the following: .... They're saying black families are looting and white families are just looking for food.... That seems to be an oblique allusion to a difference in the captions attached to two photos from two news agencies. See Snopes for an adequate debunking of the charge. Here's a clue for "Kanye": if you think The Associated Press is a racist organization, you are impugning the reputation of one of the world's most influential liberal organizations. Only CBS & the New York Times went into the tank more for John Kerry in 2004 than did AP. And maybe not even they. On a related note, I think we should all stand up and applaud the remarkably quick response being provided by our government and military agencies. Sure, state and local help is almost nonexistent; but, hey, they were victims of the hurricane, too. Though John Podhoretz is a blithering maroon when it comes to Intelligent Design, he is quite observant when he noted this, early this morning: So it took the federal government somewhere between 72 and 96 hours to go on full mobilization after the disasters of Katrina. At any time in history before the present moment, that would have been considered lightning-fast. Even as little as five years ago, we wouldn't have gotten the horrifying reports out of New Orleans that we got from Shep Smith and others using light cameras and videophones and by the time the extent of the nightmare would have become widely known, the relief operation would have been fully underway....
