Once More Unto the Breach And, Core's Law of New Media, revisited. Thanks to little green footballs for calling our attention, yesterday, to Rantings of a Sandmonkey, where it is revealed that the "outrageous", "blasphemous", "forbidden", etc., Mohammed cartoons had been published in the Egyptian newspaper El Fagr, October 17, 2005. Note that the bomb-in-the-turban cartoon, widely supposed to be the most "offensive", is right there in plain view: The Sandmonkey noted that the October publication is also mentioned at Freedom for Egyptians; here's more of that same El Fagr page, where we can see six of the original twelve "outrageous", "blasphemous", "forbidden", etc., cartoons: Next, one of the cartoons is used on El Fagr's front page, right, as a teaser for "Special Reportage in Ramadan" inside; the date, in the lower left, has been enlarged into the middle of the image (standard European usage is day.month.year): The Sandmonkey also linked to der Standard, which had saved a screenshot from El Fagr's website, where we can see its resemblance to the preceding photo: If nothing else, the Cartoon Wars demonstrate the truth of Core's Law of New Media: There Is No Such Thing As Local News Anymore: In the Internet Age, anything anybody has said anywhere, anytime, can sooner or later become known everywhere else. Perhaps, though, Core's Law of New Media needs to be updated: There Is No Such Thing As Local News Anymore: In the Internet Age, anything anybody has said, or written, or done anywhere, anytime can sooner or later become known everywhere else. P.S. For the searchers: Muhammed Cartoons, Muhammad Cartoons, Mohammad Cartoons. (See also The Mohammed Cartoons Blogburst and Verboten.) Lane Core Jr. CIW P Thu. 02/09/06 07:45:23 AM |
