Untitled
July 24, 1994.
The grief, so faint yet not to be denied,
that comes with summer's first chill night
(announced by insects' whirr and trill,
and shrouded soon in clouds of rain)
haunts not with its own strength alone
but gives the old griefs life again
and adds their strength and number to its own.
How like that other chill—an empty heart
for the aborning dream that died,
which I alone shall mourn.
