"Youth job market tightens, but many depend on teens" My neighbor, Spencer Popelas, appears in an article in the local newspaper, today: .... Spencer Popelas, 17, of Roscoe, decided to go into business for himself during the summer. He and friend Adam Wilkinson, of Roscoe, began A & S Lawn Care two years ago. The landscaping business began with the two teenagers caring for four lawns in Roscoe. Popelas said he has 23 yards to care for this year on a weekly basis. Popelas is undecided on what he wants to study in college, but working the job has given him people skills and insight into running a small business. His business has mainly grown by word of mouth. During the off season, he and Wilkinson go door to door to look for clients. They have added teenager Josh King, of Roscoe, to the workforce. Popelas said he started the business with humble expectations. "At first I was just thinking a little extra money to go to the ice cream store and buy some candy," he said. Popelas said he charges $10 to $75 per job, depending on yard size. He said the business has been profitable enough for him to afford a vehicle, which he soon will purchase. When it comes to summer jobs, he is the envy of his peers. "Most of them always say, 'You're lucky. You get to make your own hours and stuff,'" he said.... "A House Divided" Abraham Lincoln gave his famous speech 150 years ago today, June 16, 1858. At the close of the Republican state convention that nominated him for the U.S. Senate. + + + + + If we could first know where we are, and whither we are tending, we could then better judge what to do, and how to do it. We are now far into the fifth year, since a policy was initiated, with the avowed object, and confident promise, of putting an end to slavery agitation. Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only, not ceased, but has constantly augmented. In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached, and passed. "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved I do not expect the house to fall but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other....
